In cooperation with 16 partners from five countries, Jacobs University’s Maritime Logistics workgroup has delivered the first results of an EU-financed project to a multinational consortium in Brussels.

December 15, 2011

The MIELE project (short for Multimodal Interoperability E-services for Logistics and Environment sustainability) is monitored by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, and Waterways and Shipping Directorate Northwest. The European Commission’s Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T-Agency) is co-financing the project.

Set to run until the end of 2013 it comprises 16 research and industrial partners from Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Cyprus, and has been granted a total budget of €15.9m. It aims to develop an interoperable Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platform for fostering the integration of different multimodal transport and logistics service providers in EU and international network.

The German part of the MIELE project is led by Jacobs University's Maritime Logistics Workgroup with Kieserling-Foundation Distinguished Professor Jens Froese, at the helm of the 7-strong team.

For the project, placed in the category of a pre-implementation study, the group has constituted Bremen-based dbh Logistics IT AG and SIGNALIS GmbH as industrial partners.

The Jacobs University team has now  presented the first part of their work in Brussels to a consortium made up of TEN-T EA project managers, representatives of project partners and reviewers who will evaluate the progress of the project.

The reviewers include:
• E-government policy implementation: Prof. F. Beltrame, President DIGITPA - Italian e-government Agency
• Industrial: Giancarlo Michellone - former Board Member Fiat Group
• ICT for logistics: Dr. Frank Arendt - ICT Director of ISL (Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics, Bremen)
• International Regulations: Dr. L. F. Resano - Chairman IMO's Working Group on Maritime Single Windows
• EU Maritime Affairs: Dr. Alessandra Zampieri – HoU Maritime Affairs JRC ISPRA
• Moderator: Prof. L. Valente de Oliveira

Prof. Froese says about the meeting: “With the current activities completed, we have reached to the second milestone of the project and completed the first two deliverables. The meeting in Brussels provided us the opportunity to present the results of our work in front of the EU-commission and project partners. We are quite happy from the results and the synergy of exchanged information at such a European-wide platform. We are expecting to realize further achievements and successful pilot tests during the year 2012”.

In the summer the research partners already got together for a three-day stakeholder meeting in Madrid as part of the biggest clustering meeting of the TEN-T Motorways of the Sea projects in Europe. The conference was also attended by Prof. Froese and Jacobs Research Associate Burcu Aslanyürek.
