New guests students on campus
This upcoming spring semester the Jacobs community welcomes 23 new members on campus – visiting and exchange students from the United States and Russia.
January 24, 2012For the last eight years Jacobs University and the Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, have been working closely together to enable students to study abroad for one semester.
As a result of this successful partnership, 17 undergraduate students from Lafayette College are visiting Jacobs University this year, accompanied by their professor Yih-Choung Yu, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Lafayette.
To learn about their host country, the Lafayette students have enrolled in courses on German politics and culture as well as German language courses. They will be able to experience the European and Russian lifestyle during excursions to Berlin, Brussels, St. Petersburg and the German island of Helgoland.
Meanwhile, Prof. Yih-Choung Yu will offer two courses at Jacobs: ‘Medicine by Design – Technological Revolution in Medicine’ and ‘Basic Electrical Circuit Analysis’.
The ‘Lafayetties’ (as they are affectionately called on campus) won’t be the only US students visiting Jacobs. Last fall, Jacobs University established a new visiting program with Wellesley College in Massachusetts. One student from this US institution will again be joining the Jacobs community for the spring semester. Furthermore, two exchange students from Rice University and Washington State University will be setting up a temporary home on campus as part of Jacobs University’s exchange partnerships.
New exchange with St. Petersburg State University
For the first time, Jacobs University also welcomes two exchange students from its new exchange partner St. Petersburg State University as well as visiting student from Northeastern University in Boston.
Polina Kuznetsona studies Neuroscience and Cognitive Psychology at St. Petersburg State University. The 19-year-old is looking forward to her time in Bremen: "I hope that I will make many new friends, learn more about my subjects and be able to travel around Germany. I have only been to Cologne and Frankfurt before."
Jacobs University strongly believes in the invaluable experience of a study-abroad semester - not just for students, but also for the institution. While students from partner universities can experience life on the Bremen campus, Jacobs students are also spending time abroad on exchanges and visits each year.
“It is always a tremendous benefit to our community to have students from different universities on our campus. Life on campus will be enriched through different ideas, initiatives and cultural concepts,“ says Dr. Antonia Gohr, Director of Jacobs University’s Office for Academic Affairs and International Office. “Thus, the program is not only of benefit to the exchange and visiting students, but also to Jacobs students, who have an opportunity to meet students from different kinds of institutions in the US and Russia.”
Jacobs University continues to build on its existing visiting and exchange programs and constant work is put into expanding partnerships and collaborations. Jacobs University is regularly chosen as a partner not only for its internationality and the diverse choice of courses (all taught in English), but also for its attractive location in the heart of Europe.
