Abstract:

Every year Jacobs University’s own debating tournament, Jacobs Open, takes place. This year it will happen from April 13th until April 15th. Approximately 80 debaters from many European countries will come to campus to this international event.

The debates will involve a variety of topics that are not known in advance. They may range from the British Royal Wedding and presidential elections in Russia to development of new drugs to cure AIDS. The debaters are therefore supposed to be knowledgeable in a variety of areas and be prepared to effectively persuade their audience and adjudicators regarding their point of view.

The quality of the debates is going to be very high, as many experienced debaters usually participate in the tournament. The Grand Finale, which will take place on Sunday, April 15th, in the West Wing of the IRC, is expected to be a very exciting one with heated discussions and witty arguments. At the same time, a significant number of newcomers will participate in the tournament. In such a way they will be able to develop their debating and rhetorical skills.

Our university campus with an incredibly international environment is a very unique place to host such a debating tournament, as many teams from all the corners of Europe will come to Jacobs in the middle of April. Debaters will be able to experience the special campus environment during their staying here. Our students, in turn, can learn very much by meeting the debaters and watching the tournament progress.
Jacobs Open is therefore a very special event that brings our university students and international debaters together, so that they can learn many new things and gain memorable experience.
