Education and orientation: Join the Jacobs Foundation Year Program

Education and orientation: The Jacobs Foundation Year Program
Economics, engineering and the natural sciences are taught during the Jacobs Foundation Year Program

Jacobs University’s Foundation Year Program is geared towards secondary school graduates from all over the world. It’s an opportunity for students to be introduced to university life and gain important qualifications to successfully continue their studies. With a small group of up to 20 participants, individual and intensive study preparation is guaranteed. The program focuses on qualification through the acquisition of academic skills and admission credential and orientation in core academic subjects such as economics, engineering and the natural sciences.

During the Foundation Year, the language of instruction is English. The instructors are well-versed in bringing together students from many different cultural and social backgrounds in a dynamic and interactive teaching atmosphere.

Foundation Year students can actively shape their curriculum and set multiple academic focal points. Excursions to various cities and regions of Europe are only some of the highlights of the Foundation year program. The program’s aim is to build social and intercultural abilities and to support students with their choice of study program or profession. It therefore serves as a bridge between school and university.

“It’s fascinating to see how the students develop during the program. They discover their strengths, talents and interests and gain self-confidence. After two semesters it’s as if we see a different group of students before us than when they started,” says Nicole Smeal, Coordinator of the Foundation Year Program.

Jacobs University’s internationality, English as language of instruction and the flexibility of the curriculum also convinced Christian Schlösser from Darmstadt to join the Foundation Year program. The 21-year-old successfully finished the Foundation Year program this summer. “I wanted to really improve my English. In my second semesters I could focus on one study program in particular, which I found great. The quality of the lectures is excellent and during the lab work I could put into practice what I had learnt in theory in class before,” he says.

Christian was so impressed by his time on campus that he chose to study Biochemistry and Cell Biology at Jacobs University. He can transfer the credits he earned during the Foundation Year into this Bachelor program. Marie Vivas, Director of Admission at Jacobs University, says: “After finishing the Foundation Year program the students are very well prepared to take up their studies at a challenging university.”
