Orientation Week 2012

Orientation Week is designed to assist you - as a new student - to settle into university life at Jacobs University.

Our unique series of events will introduce you to your academic program, your academic advisors, faculty, your fellow students, your college (especially if you are an undergraduate student), campus life – and life off-campus (especially if you are a graduate student).

With the help of our student advisors, graduate mentors, intercultural trainers and student organizers, your transition will be informative, fun, and definitely unforgettable.

Orientation Week 2012 will be held from Tuesday, August 28, to Monday, September 3.

Information for incoming students:

ARRIVAL

  • WHEN?
    • The Orientation Week starts on Tuesday, August 28th, 2012 at 07:00 a.m. Once you've entered campus, there will be a Registration Desk in the entrance of the Reimar Luest Hall (left of the campus gates) where the Admissions Staff will welcome you and give you your welcome package. Light refreshments and drinks will be offered in the Student Affairs lounge near the Registration Desk - so in case there is a line, please take a break and make yourself comfortable after your long journey.
      NOTE: If you are an incoming undergraduate student and wish a pick-up from Bremen airport on your Arrival Day, Aug 28, please contact by Tuesday, August 21st Luisa Gonçalves (l.goncalves@jacobs-university.de) or your student advisor about your arrival time, so that the pick-up can be arranged accordingly. If you are a graduate student, please contact Jessica Werkmann (j.werkmann@jacobs-university.de) about your arrival time, so that the pick-up can be arranged accordingly.
    • Please note that August 28th is the earliest arrival date. We cannot offer campus accommodation to students who may need to arrive earlier, but we have prepared a list of Off-Campus Housing Facilities for such cases. If you cannot find a place to stay, please contact the Orientation Week Team (see Contact Us section below) for support. Please try not to arrive late, as you may miss out on important and informative O-week events.
      NOTE: Bachelor and Master students who are unable to arrive on Campus by September 21, 2012 at the latest cannot enroll in the respective semester. Bachelor students can defer their admission for one year (i.e., begin their studies in September 2012).
    • PhD students ONLY: If you arrive in the middle of the semester, please see the Registrar’s Office on your first day to officially enroll. If you have been assigned on-campus housing, you can see the security office on the right hand side once you enter the campus.

REMEMBER AND READ

  • There are a few important tasks that you need to complete before and after your arrival in Bremen. This is your summarized 10-Point To-Do List:
  1. Fill in the Housing Preference Survey by no later than July 15, 2012. Don't know which College to choose? Click below to check them out! Colleges
  2. In case you need an entry and/or student visa, make sure that you have fulfilled all visa requirements. Check the Registrar’s office for more information.
  3. Plan your living expenses well in advance. Check the information for undergraduate students and for graduate students. For further details please find the contact information of the Financial Services Department here.
  4. Before coming to Jacobs University, we suggest that you receive vaccinations against the following avoidable diseases, as per the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO):
    a. Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) b. Diphtheria, tetanus, and polio (DPT) c. Hepatitis A&B d. Chicken pox e. Influenza
    In individual cases, missing vaccinations may be obtained in Bremen.
  5. Prepare all your official certificates. For undergraduate students the Admission Office will need to receive your final highschool transcript (original or a copy certified by your highschool). Graduate Students should bring their university degree certificate and/or university transcript, if they have not already sent it to the Dean's Office. All academic records must be translated into English or German with a seal affixed by the translator stating that the translation is a true copy of the academic record.
  6. Be prepared to bring a formal outfit. There are several events during the academic year where this can be of use for you. Many students also bring their national costumes and wear them during different formal and less formal events.
  7. Do not forget to bring at least two passport pictures if you are an international student. You will need them for your Residence Permit Application.The required standards for the pictures are described at Special Regulations for Residence Permit Photos.
  8. Consider taking a language placement exam during the O Week. Available language courses: a. German b. French c. Spanish d. Chinese e. Russian
  9. Remember to sign and submit the Forms and Agreements listed below during the Orientation Week. Familiarize yourself in advance with the digital versions of the documents. You will receive hardcopies of these forms in your Welcome Package upon your arrival at Jacobs University:
