Research Interests

Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine is the science of behavior and mental processes in connection with health and morbidity. It is mainly concerned with risk and health behaviors, psychological processes, and psycho-social factors as well as their interrelation with physical diseases and constraints (Lippke & Renneberg, 2005). On the basis of health psychology, strategies can be developed which help people to improve their health and increase their happiness. Health promotion does not only target individuals, it also provides approaches to support institutions and environments. Health psychology is strongly theory oriented: Theories and models of behavior change are tested, developed, and used to make interventions more effective.

Dr. Lippke’s main research interests are focused on health psychology across the entire life span and on the investigation of health behaviors in work contexts. Her expertise covers four areas: “theories and models,” “workplace health promotion,” “lifelong health/risk behavior change” and “multiple behavior change.” Being involved in multiple research projects, she investigates health and risk behavior as well as self-regulation of behaviors across the lifespan and in different contexts. Dr. Lippke holds professional knowledge about aging, prevention, and disease management, which is also reflected in many of her publications. Through collaboration with colleagues from medicine, gerontology, sociology, and economics, she has been conducting research internationally and interdisciplinary. Currently, her collaborative efforts extend to experts in lifespan psychology and other fields related to lifelong learning and institutional development.

Together with her team, Dr. Lippke has applied and tested diverse theories and models of health behavior change in different settings, for instance,

  • The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA; e.g., Lippke et al., 2010; Schwarzer et al., 2007, 2008).
  • Transtheoretical Model (TTM; e.g., Duan, Lippke et al., 2011; Plotnikoff, Lippke et al., 2010).
  • Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB, e.g., Plotnikoff, Lippke et al., 2010; Nigg, Lippke & Maddock, 2009).
  • Protection Motivation Theory (PMT, e.g., Lippke & Plotnikoff, 2009; Plotnikoff, Lippke et al., 2010).
  • Social Cognitive Theory (SCT, Plotnikoff, Lippke et al., 2008).
  • Multi-Stage-Model (MSM, Lippke & Ziegelmann, 2006).

Her current research aims to cover the following five areas:

  • Health-related behavior, its regulation, and its outcomes (such as happiness, quality of life, work commitment, and productivity),
  • Healthy lifestyle and multi-behavior change, transfer and compensatory cognitions,
  • Occupational health promotion,
  • Life span approaches, successful aging, and lifelong learning,
  • Acculturation and ethnicity.

One of Lippke's major contributions to the field of psychology and public health is the development of the Compensatory Carry-Over Action Model (CCAM; Lippke et al., 2021). This model explains how positive behaviour change in one domain can lead to facilitation of behavior in another domain. The model, which is one of the few to explicitly model multiple behavior change (MBC), has important implications for understanding how behaviour change interventions can be designed to promote sustainable behavior change across multiple domains of life.
