INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Approval of the German Academic Council

International University Bremen is very pleased with the decision made by the Wissenschaftsrat during its recent fall session.

[ Nov 19, 2001]  The Wissenschaftsrat accredited IUB as a private university and recommended initial inclusion in the University Register of the University Construction Act (Hochschulbauförderungsgesetz), a federal act implemented to support and fund construction programs for institutions of higher learning.

The Wissenschaftsrat, an advisory body to Germany's federal and state governments, intensively reviewed IUB's planning and development. Their finding: that the proposed private university structure is coherent and feasible, and that IUB fulfills all necessary conditions to begin full-time teaching and research functions.

The Wissenschaftrat's positive assessment particularly emphasizes that IUB's offerings will enrich the German higher education system. IUB's novel concept qualifies as a pilot project and satisfies all requirements of the Wissenschaftsrat. International University Bremen complements and extends university teaching and research in Bremen, as well as enriching study options in the higher education system throughout Germany.

The Hochschulbauförderungsgesetz makes it possible for universities to apply for up to 50% federal funding for building projects, provided that such projects are jointly sponsored by both state and federal government. For a private university, such as IUB, the state portion is funded by the university directly. For proposed building projects up to 2005, International University Bremen could be eligible for up to 40 million Euros in funding.

About the Wissenschaftsrat
The Wissenschaftsrat is an advisory body to Germany's federal and state (Länder) governments. Its function is to produce recommendations on the development of higher education institutions, science and the research sector as regards content and structure, as well as on the construction of new universities.

These recommendations involve considerations concerning quantitative and financial effects and the implementation of such considerations; they must be in line with the requirements of social, cultural and economic life.
