INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Lecture series resume

An inaugural faculty lecture series from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and in the School of Engineering and Science the Monday Colloquium lecture series continues.

[ Feb 18, 2002]  On 11 February, the Monday Colloquium series welcomed scientist, mathematician, entrepreneur and IUB board member, Howard L. Resnikoff. Dr. Resnikoff, who was the founding director of the Division of Information Science and Technology at the National Science Foundation in the USA, was also a founder of Thinking Machines, a parallel supercomputer company, and the founder of Aware, Inc., a mathematical engineering company that provides DSL communication technology for the Internet.

In his lecture, “Information and Communication,” Resnikoff looked back at the work of Claude Shannon, the mathematician who laid the foundation of modern information theory. Before Shannon, no one had thought it possible to transmit information error-free when noise was present. He noted that Shannon's rules about reliable communication were and are as important to the transmission of information as the laws of physics are to the movement of objects. Resnikoff went on to point out similarities between some aspects of quantum physics and information theory—with the suggestive remark, intended to entice future researchers, that 'such similarities cannot be coincidental.'

The Monday Colloquium series continues this evening, 18 February, with a talk titled “Biological Time Measurement,” by Dr. Alexander Lerchl, Professor of Biology at IUB. The Monday Colloquium lectures begin at 17:30, are held in the Administration lecture hall, and are open to the public.
