IUB vice-president elected president of the Carl Schurz Society in Bremen

Raymond O. Wells, vice president and professor of mathematics at IUB, was elected president of the Carl Schurz Society today.

[ Apr 18, 2002]  The executive committee of the society declared its support for the renowned scientist, whose selection will underline and renew the society's American connection. The selection of Professor Wells also expresses support of IUB.

Wells's responsibilities at IUB as professor of mathematics and vice president for external affairs follow a 35-year career in teaching and research at Rice University in Houston, Texas. He played an instrumental role in IUB's founding and has been directly involved in the university's development since 1998. His ties to Bremen are strong. He served in 1995-96 as visiting professor of mathematics at the University of Bremen and his wife is a native of Bremen. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University in 1965 and is the recipient of Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Alexander von Humboldt awards. He has published books in the fields of mathematics, physics, mathematical engineering, and mathematical history; and is the author of more than 100 articles in research journals.

The Carl Schurz Society was re-established in 1949 and has had a close relationship with the Bremer Senat ever since. The society works actively to strengthen German-American relations. They also sponsor numerous lectures and events. In their earlier role they arranged contacts with US soldiers stationed in Garlstedt and Bremerhaven and organized tours of Bremen in order to acquaint the soldiers with their surroundings.
