Search begins for new IUB faculty

   

[ Dec 11, 2000]  International University Bremen, a private research university, will open with its first undergraduate semester in September 2001. Openings for Assistant, Associate and Full Professorships, depending on qualification, now exist in the following schools:

School of Engineering and Science

17 Professorships - Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Related Engineering / Science Disciplines

Initially, undergraduate majors will be offered in the above major disciplines as well as in the following areas:


  • Computational Science
  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
  • Earth and Planetary Sciences
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Biochemistry and Cell Biology
  • Bioinformatics

Additional undergraduate majors and advanced degree programs are being developed for the subsequent years. Accordingly, applicants are expected to have profound knowledge and excellent record in research and/or teaching related to one or more of the following areas: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology; Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering; Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry; Geophysics and Geology, Space Physics, Planetary Physics; Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Neurosciences and Bioinformatics.


School of Humanities and Social Sciences

10 Professorships - Cognitive Psychology, Social Sciences, History, Fine Arts and Literature, Applied Statistics / Research Methods

Undergraduate majors will be offered in Cognitive Psychology, Social Sciences, History, and Fine Arts and Literature. Advanced degree programs are being developed for the subsequent years. Applicants are expected to excel in research and/or teaching within one or more of the following specific areas: Social and Economic Cognition, Information Processing, Social Psychology; Comparative Economics, Modern Management and Marketing, Information Technology; Comparative Politics, European Politics, International Relations and the Nation State; Comparative Communication Behaviour, Mass Communication Systems, New Media and the Knowledge Society; Contemporary History, Social History, History of Science and Technology; Comparative Literature and Languages, Art and Art History, Musicology.

One of the goals IUB has set for itself is to challenge traditional disciplinary boundaries and to teach and do research in fields which require problem-orientated transdisciplinary approaches.

Professors are expected to engage in active research. The teaching load will range from 3 to 6 hours per week. Particularly useful will be experience with or an aptitude in the use of electronic media in classroom teaching. The language of instruction is English. Strong interaction with the students, also outside class and lab hours, is an indispensible element of IUB.

Salaries will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. IUB does not offer tenure, but contract terms are flexible and may be extended based upon performance and the university’s needs. A normal initial contract will be for a period of three to five years. One-year visiting faculty will also be considered.
