INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BREMEN

A campus comes to life

[ Sep 07, 2001]  The trenches have been filled back in, the grass seed planted and lamp posts installed. After many months of demolition, construction and remodeling, the IUB campus, though far from complete, has taken on that lively and civilized appearance that comes with the arrival of people. The core staff have been here since the very beginning, starting out in one half of the administration building while the other was still being remodeled, but the campus, the newly landscaped campus - especially evenings, continued to remain a lovely yet lonely place.

This month, with the arrival of new students, additional staff, and that most necessary of all commodities for a university, a new faculty, the campus is finally becoming a lively place. Evening conversations, which earlier might have involved brief exchanges with a lone security guard, now linger on as people cross paths and stop to visit. Windows which only a few weeks earlier appeared dark and empty, are now filled with light.

The newly remodeled buildings, elegant in their sparseness and clean, straight lines; yet just last month still empty, are now home to bath towels, boxes, and bicycles. These everyday signs of life deliver the message: people now live here!

There will still be room for many more faces, evening strolls and sidewalk conversations; the campus is far from overflowing, and some buildings still stand empty, waiting to be renovated, but at last there is a budding sense of community at IUB, the feeling of a campus coming alive.
