Kruppies and IUB honor benefactor and dedicate college

Alfried Krupp College, the result of a 10 million DM gift from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, was officially dedicated today.

[ Apr 24, 2002]  On behalf of the 130 members of Krupp college, IUB student and college council president Robert Eckhoff, college masters Hartmut Wessler and Marita Hartnack, and IUB president Fritz Schaumann welcomed special guest Prof. Dr. Berthold Beitz from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Stiftung to the dedication of Alfried Krupp College today.

Other invited guests included Bremen's mayor Dr. Henning Scherf, State Secretary Rainer Köttgen, director of the IUB Board of Governors Dr. Reimar Lüst, as well as faculty and staff of IUB.

Following a tour of the college an elegant stainless steel dedication plaque was unveiled by Prof. Beitz. President Schaumann in his remarks expressed his deep thanks to the foundation for their key support at an early stage of IUB's development. "This early contribution of the Krupp Foundation was a significant signal... in winning additional support from the private sector - within the City-State of Bremen and elsewhere."

The unveiling of the plaque was preceded by opening remarks from Eckhoff and the masters. Completing the program were performances by the Krupp College Choir and student dancers performing to Latin American music. Afterwards the guests joined Krupp College students for a celebration banquet in the college.

The three wings which constitute the living quarters of the college opened in September 2001 after extensive renovation of what had been officers' quarters on the former military grounds. This past month the newly-constructed four-story side wing of the college was completed. The new construction includes attractive dining facilities, offices, recreation and study areas for students in the college, and the masters' apartment.

"A generous use of glass and color accents ensures a light and communicative environment, " indicated architect Jürgen Böge from Böge and Linder, the architectural firm responsible for the project.

Alfried Krupp College is the first of three planned residential colleges for students living on the IUB campus.
