Appointee to the Commerzbank Chair for Information Management announced

IUB professor Adalbert Wilhelm, the first to hold the Commerzbank Chair for Information Management professorship, was introduced today at the Commerzbank Bremen.

[ Feb 26, 2002]  IUB president Fritz Schaumann thanked the Commerzbank Foundation for their generous support of IUB and added that he was pleased that someone as exceptionally well-qualified as Professor Wilhelm would assume this sponsored professorship.

Wilhelm, who joined the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at IUB in September 2001, stressed the importance of information management, pointing out that the subject encompasses technical questions concerning the infrastructure of information technology, as well as the psychological and sociological effects of living in an information society. From this standpoint, the Commerzbank Chair of Information Management is an excellent example of transdisciplinarity in research at IUB.

In his research, Wilhelm will initially concentrate on information visualization, data mining, explorative data analysis, and statistical graphics. Further cooperative research projects in the areas of technology and sociology will develop out of these central topics. “The research agenda at IUB, in the category ‘Information and Communication,’ offers an excellent forum, as well as the necessary framework, for these projects. IUB’s plan to support such areas of research was one of the deciding factors for me in my decision to come to Bremen,” commented Wilhelm.

Dr. Christoph Uhsadel, director of the Commerzbank Foundation, explained that in the beginning the plan for a new university was met with cautious skepticism, but that it has, since then, proven itself. “Public and private support of research and teaching, encouragement of the best, equal opportunity, national identity, and international dialogue - all come together at IUB. Out of this innovative process new structures will develop; the Commerzbank Foundation professorship, Information Management, is an integrative component in the development of IUB,” added Uhsadel.
