Student Service Center opens in January

Finding a dentist, catching the right train, looking for a job, or just learning what there is to do in Bremen on a weekend: this information and more is now available in IUB's new Student Service Center.

[ Jan 18, 2002]  The idea for the service center came from Dr. Hans Giesecke, director of Student Affairs, in response to the requests and needs of IUB's students, many of whom are not fluent in German.

As ideas for the new service service center were being discussed, it came to light that the IUB Volunteers were looking for new projects and the group was quickly integrated into the new project, with the result that the center will be staffed primarily by members of the IUB Volunteers. Training sessions lead by Student Affairs staff members were held in early December. Ten service center volunteers share the workload. They speak both English and German and are familiar with both IUB and, of course, Bremen. For more complex questions or further assistance service center volunteers are able to refer students to Student Affairs staff or other agencies. The center is open four days per week.

Services offered include:

  • Medical Referral Support (minor first aid, assistance making doctor's and dentists's appointments)
  • Assistance with travel arrangements
  • Information about cultural and social activities and events
  • Important telephone numbers
  • Student forms (course registration, residence permit applications, etc.)
  • Assistance with locating services or vendors in Bremen
  • Campus job listings
  • Assistance with completing forms, German language and more
The new service center will be open four days a week, from 09:00 until 15:00 on Mondays and Tuesdays, until 17:00 on Wednesdays, and until 13:00 on Thursdays. The center is located in the Student Affairs wing of the IUB Administration building.
