IUB rocks! The university celebrates the start of a second year

With festive music, color, and dress IUB begins its second year of academic teaching and research.

[ Sep 05, 2002]  "I place my hopes in all of us that we will have a fruitful and productive second year at IUB with many rich experiences and excellent results in learning, teaching, research, and of course, in the growth of IUB as a private institution for higher learning."

With these encouraging words President Fritz Schaumann concluded his welcoming remarks to faculty, students, and staff on the occasion of the annual opening of the academic year at IUB. The ceremony began with the procession of new students along with members of the faculties into the University Cinema hall. Music was provided by students and alumni of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen.

Following the welcoming address by the university president, the chair-secretary of Alfried Krupp College, Robert Eckhoff, addressed the audience. He spoke of the challenges that were met by his class in the first year and welcomed the new students with what has become the university's inofficial rallying cry, "IUB rocks!"

Additional speakers included Professor Laurenz Thomsen from the School of Engineering and Science and Professor Chris Welzel from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Thomsen spoke of his own experiences in higher education, the importance of flexibility and a world perspective, and the possibilities that are present today for students who already in their first semester are meeting and networking with future colleagues from many different lands. Professor Welzel addressed the job perspectives of the social scientist, but going beyond such practical considerations, he concluded his remarks with the observation that at the personal level, "the social sciences are concerned with questions of sense, of meaning, and of identity."

"That we have created an international university is indeed a tremendous accomplishment and one that we should never take for granted." With these words Thomas J. Hochstettler, Vice President for Academic Affairs, concluded the program, finishing by reading the list of student names on the President's List - that is those with a cumulative grade point average at the end of last year of 1.5 or higher.
