Festive prelude to new academic year: Annual Opening 2004

On 31 August IUB celebrated—already for the fourth time—the annual opening of the academic year. IUB President Fritz Schaumann welcomed 343 new first-year students to the Grohn campus. Beginning in September more than 850 Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. students will be studying at IUB. During the opening ceremony outstanding students were recognized and IUB student Aurora Simionescu was honored. She received the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) prize for her exceptional student performance and significant social and intercultural commitment.

[ Sep 06, 2004]  In what has become almost a tradition, this year’s annual opening began with the procession of the new first-year students, accompanied by the faculty, into the festively decorated campus sports hall. President Schaumann and the deans of the School of Engineering and Science, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Jacobs Center welcomed the students. The new class was also welcomed by three representatives of the IUB Student Parliament, Ben Dryden, Melanie Wilneder, and Tasaffy Hossain. On behalf of the faculty, biologist and home chef Alexander Lerchl offered “An Academic Menu – Reflections on the Academic Life of IUB.”

DAAD Prize for Auroa Simionescu
In her third year and majoring in physics as well as geology & astrophysics, Aurora Simionescu plans to graduate in spring 2005. The performance required comes to her easily. In addition to her studies she is actively involved in campus life. She organized a country information day for Romania and is involved in numerous project groups and clubs such as the Debating Society. Of particular merit is her role as tutor. As a student teaching assistant she has tutored her fellow students for two years.
