On 26 November 2004 Max Kaase, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Vice President of IUB, was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from City University London.

Professor Kaase was presented with the award during a ceremony in the university’s Guildhall by Professor Roger Jowell, Director of City University London’s Center for Comparative Social Surveys. He received the honorary degree in recognition of his major contributions to European and global social sciences.
Max Kaase received his PhD from the University of Cologne in 1964. In 1972 he was awarded his Venia Legendi in Political Science by the University of Mannheim. Between 1974 and 1979 he was the Managing Director of the Mannheim Centre for Survey Research and Methodology, followed by a professorship for political science and international comparative social research at the University of Mannheim from 1980 to 1993. Prior to his entry as Dean and Vice President of IUB in October 2000, he was a research professor for “Comparison of Democratic Systems” at the Social Science Research Center Berlin.
As a member of numerous national and international committees, research projects, and institutions Professor Kaase continually dedicated his scientific career to science management, political consulting, and research advancement. Notably important positions were his memberships with the German Wissenschaftsrat (Science Council), the senate and the steering committee of the German Research Foundation. He was also Vice President of the European Science Foundation (ESF). Since July 2003 he has been President of the International Political Science Association (IPSA).
Max Kaase’s scientific work focuses on comparative political science, political sociology with an emphasis in electoral sociology, mass communication, methods of survey research, and science policy. He has published extensively as author and editor respectively on political sociology, comparative politics, political theory, mass communication, and social science methods. Furthermore he is a member of numerous editorial boards of political science journals.
