IUB’s Activities within the Program of „Bremen – City of Science 2005“

On 16 February 2005 the City of Bremen will officially open the extensive program for celebrating the award “City of Science 2005” Bremen and Bremerhaven received from the Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities in Germany. IUB will participate in this year-round sience fair by offering various highlights.

[ Jan 17, 2005]  ZEIT Debating Tournament Finale
On 13 February, even before the official opening ceremony, IUB invites the Bremen public to participate in the grand finale of the „IUB Open 2005“ debating tournament as a first taste of the coming „City of Science“ activities. The „battle of words“ takes place in the Bremische Bürgerschaft (Bremen parliament) at 2 p.m. Using the „British Parliamentary Style“ four winning teams of the preliminary rounds held at IUB will strive against each other. Admission is free, the “battle language” is English. The tournament IUB Open 2005 is organized by the IUB student debating society and part of the series „ZEITDebatten“ promoted by the German weekly newspaper ZEIT. For more information see www.iub-open.de.

First Bremen Children’s University
In spring, between February and April, IUB and the neighboring parish St. Martini will offer a unique lecture series: IUB scientists of the humanities and social sciences will try to answer questions of school children of the age 8 to 13 concerning the human society and communal life of people. The children’s‘ questions will be collected in the schools of the northern part of Bremen in a post card campaign of the St. Martini community. About 200 children will be able to participate in each lecture, while their parents will be able to watch the event separately via video transmission.

The lectures are part of the first Bremen children’s university, to which the University of Bremen will also contribute with a substantial program especially targeted at children of primary school age.

Black Boxes
From May to October the so called „Black Boxes“ will tour around various Bremen city districts as a kind of mobile science exhibition. In reference to Bremen’s past as a renowned ship yard town and trade harbor, which successfully transformed into a „City of Science“, Bremens major science institutions will rig 15 shipping containers with exhibits of their research activities. IUB will provide a Black Box introducing the theme „The world inside your head – surprises in cognitive psychology“.

Exhibition „Discoveries“ in the Bremen City Hall
In June and July, right in the Bremen city center, combining the unique atmosphere of the period architecture of the city hall with advanced science topics, the exhibition „Discoveries“ will feature the theme of „time“ as represented by the scientific work of various science institutions. IUB will contribute exhibits highlighting the topics of „lifespan development and lifelong learning“ as well as „geological and astronomical processes“.

SichtWeisen Lecture Series
Within the program of „City of Science 2005“ IUB will continue its German language lecture series “SichtWeisen” (ViewPoints) in the Bremen concert hall „Die Glocke“ with a spring and a fall season. The series presents IUB research highlights to the general public. Each event features two IUB professors coming from different scientific backgrounds presenting their research on one subject. The talks are complemented by an artistic performance that offers a "sensual" approach to the subject.

Topics of the coming spring season will feature Albert Einstein and his work as seen by a physicist and a historian, factors critical for success in matrimony and partnership as seen by an economist and a psychologist, and risk assessment in the light of sociology and geology.

From February onwards IUB will present an online overview of its “City of Science 2005” activities at www.iu-bremen.de/stadtderwissenschaft with regular information updates.
