INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Discover the Magical East

From April 7-11 IUB students organize the international event „Magical East“ hosted at IUB. For four days, 25 students from 14 nations explore far eastern cultures.

[ Apr 01, 2005]  In lectures, seminars and workshops the participants study Asian cultures – beyond the cultural clichés that often distort perceptions. Speakers will be IUB professors, external scholars as well as students. The participants will discuss cultural interaction from diverse perspectives. What are the differences, what are similarities?

The conference will be opened on Friday, April 8, at 9.30 a.m. in the conference hall in the campus center. The short opening ceremony will be followed by the opening lecture at 10 a.m.; Dr. Ulrich Kühnen, Professor of Psychology at IUB, will give the lecture on "Culture and Cognition: How Westerners and Asians think differently". Participants can look forward to a wide range of topics: From Japanese work ethics to storytelling in China; from Indian Dances to Vietnamese ancestor cults.

Friday - Laying the foundations
Saturday - Experiencing the east: China, Japan, India, Vietnam
Sunday - Crossing cultural borders: contrasts and similarities
Monday - On the border between Europe and Asia

The event is organised by AEGEE Bremen, founded by students at IUB in 2004.
