Yale Mathematics Professor to visit IUB

Dr. Serge Lang, Professor of Mathematics at Yale University, will visit IUB, by invitation of IUB's mathematics group, on May 23 & 24. Lang will be giving two lectures for students on Monday, May 23. On Tuesday, May 24, he will give a talk in a mathematics colloquium jointly sponsored by the mathematicians at IUB and Universität Bremen. This talk will also take place at IUB.

[ May 23, 2005]  Professor Lang is a mathematician who is known for his work in algebra and for writing a variety of mathematics textbooks, many of which are widely used. In addition to being a mathematician, Lang spends much of his time engaged in politics, by challenging everyone he believes is misusing science or mathematics to further their own goals.

On Wednesday, May 25, there will be a public lecture by Lang about AIDS: "Challenging the HIV-orthodoxy". The lecture starts at 17.15 h and takes place at Universität Bremen, SuUB 1490 (Bibliotheksraum). Lang is an "AIDS dissident"; he maintains that the common belief that HIV causes AIDS has not been backed up by sufficient scientific research, yet for political and commercial reasons further research questioning this belief is uppressed. Attendees can look forward to a controversial evening.
