New laboratory building for physics, chemistry and biosciences at IUB

On Wednesday, 25 May, IUB celebrated the official opening of Laboratory II. Blue skies and sunshine accompanied the reception. IUB president Dr. Fritz Schaumann welcomed about 120 guests. He thanked all companies and scientists involved in planning and constructing the building.

[ May 25, 2005]  Prof. Dr. Gerhard Haerendel, Dean of the School of Engineering and Science, was delighted about the short time the construction took. Former maintenance halls for tanks had been converted and a new part had been added to the building. Prof. Haerendel emphasized that the layout of the laboratories encourages cooperation between research groups: “there are no barriers between the disciplines”.

The kind of research being carried out in the new laboratory was presented by the professors Dr. Arnulf Materny, Professor of Chemical Physics, and Dr. Albert Jeltsch, Professor of Biochemistry. They introduced all research groups and gave a short overview about key aspects.

Most research groups could move into the new building of laboratory II at the beginning of 2005 . Now, both laboratory buildings for engineering and science are finished. Twelve research groups from professors of physics, chemistry and biosciences have moved in the new laboratories which have a total area of about 1500 sqm. The layout of the laboratories encourages cooperation between research groups. All laboratories are connected and most special equipment is jointly used.
