INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Conference at IUB: Mapping Uncertain Territories

From June 2 – 5 the 14th conference of the German Society for Contemporary Theatre and Drama in English (CDE) takes place at International University Bremen (IUB). This year’s conference focuses on space and place in contemporary theatre and drama. 60 participants from 10 nations will explore in which way theatre engages time and space.

[ May 31, 2005]  In Western societies globalisation changes the perception of space and place: The world becomes a smaller place. In theatre this always has been true. Each production works out the imagined spaces of a text and connects it with real social, cultural an political spaces. This ambivalent relation of text, stage and society will be discussed.

Participants look forward to a manifold program. Speakers from the US, Australia and UK are expected as well as various performances: The Winter’s Tale by the Shakespeare Company, the solo performance “Holy Dirt” by the Mexican artist Marcos Martinez and Eve Ensler’s “Vagina Monologues” produced by IUB students. The keynote lecture will be held by the renowned scholar Prof. Una Chaudhuri, Professor of English and Drama at New York University. Prof. Chaudhuri will be talking about: “Post-Human Cartographies: Mapping the Nature-Culture Borderlands in Contemporary Theatre.
