Class of 2005 Receive their Diplomas

IUB celebrates its second graduating class. On Friday, June 3, 170 graduates from 40 countries were awarded the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science respectively. Additionally, four students received their Master’s degree and five their PhD.

[ Jun 03, 2005]  For the last three years the graduates have lived on campus and prepared for this day. In the presence of their parents, old and new friends, and the IUB community they received their diploma of: Bachelor of Sciences, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts or PhD. The ceremony began at 10 a.m. with a procession of the graduating class and their professors.

In his welcome note IUB president Fritz Schaumann (PDF of Speech here) emphasized that 90% of the class of 2005 completed their studies successfully with an average age of 22 years. "We set a benchmark in comparison with other universities," said Schaumann. He also focused on student activities: "Besides our academic area these activities are important examples of intercultural communication and productive cooperation."

For the graduating students Sian Nadia Raghoo(PDF of Speech here) and Martijn Rooker made addresses. "IUB has given us all a unique opportunitiy," said 23 year old Trinidadian Raghoo. IUB was an "academic and emotional rollercoaster ride," she claimed. "If we did not take it, we would have looked back and regretted."

The keynote speech was held by Prof. Malcolm Gillis (PDF of Speech here), former president of Rice University in Texas, USA. He described the changing economical and cultural conditions of tomorrow. IUB students were well prepared for cross-cultural interaction. Academic excellence and their "adventurous spirit and willingness to take risks" distingiushed these graduates. "No graduates of any university this year are better prepared to deal with this New World." As president of IUB's partner university Rice, Prof. Gillis was significantly involved in the foundation of IUB in 1999.

It was just last year that the class, the IUB's pioneers (PDF of Alumni Association President Raluca Puie's Speech here), graduated. Since then, the 104 graduates have begun international careers. Three quarters of the 2004 graduating class continued on to graduate programs at universities around the globe. One quarter went into the job market and now work for mainly international companies. The class of 2005 continues this success story. Many students already got accepted for graduate programs by leading universities or received a job offer.
