Karel Urbanek Award for Werner Bergholz

Dr. Werner Bergholz, Professor of Electrical Engineering at IUB, received the Karel Urbanek Award 2005 by the SEMI International Standards Committee on July 13, 2005 in San Francisco. The annual award honors diplomacy and fairness in the internationalization of the semiconductor industry.

[ Jul 15, 2005]  Werner Bergholz has been recognized "for the high quality of his leadership of the European Silicon Wafer and Regional Standards Committees, and his contributions as a long-time member of the SEMI International Standards Committee and its Subcommittee on the Regulations." The presentation of the prestigious award has been made at the SEMICON West 2005 Standards Reception.

SEMI is a global industry association serving companies that develop and provide manufacturing technology, materials and services to make semiconductors, flat panel displays, micro-electromechanical systems and related microelectronics. The annual Urbanek Awards are SEMI's most significant honor for participants in the SEMI Standards Program. The program, established in 1973, covers all aspects of process equipment and materials, from manufacturing to test, assembly and packaging, aiming at developing international standards. The Award is named in honor of Karel Urbanek, co-founder of Tencor Instruments, and former member of the SEMI Board of Directors and an instrumental leader of the SEMI Standards program, who led the program through the difficult early years.

Professor Werner Bergholz joined IUB in fall 2002. His research focuses on microelectronics, with a particular emphasis on the production process of microelectronic elements and its influence on circuit reliability. He also is a specialist on quality management models in organizations. Prior to his IUB assignment he worked as a quality manager at Infineon Technologies and headed several semiconductor groups of the Siemens AG in Munich. Her received his doctorate in Semiconductor Physics in 1978 from the Göttingen University, followed by post-doctoral research in Göttingen and Oxford.
