IUB appointed a member of the Rat Deutscher Sternwarten

On Monday, September 26, IUB has been elected an official member of the Rat Deutscher Sternwarten (RDS). The election took place during the annual meeting of the German Astronomical Society at the University of Cologne.

[ Sep 27, 2005]  The appointment resulted from the application made at the RDS’ spring meeting in Berlin. Prof. Stephan Rosswog, professor of astrophysics, had presented IUB’s educational and research activities in the field of Space- and Astrophysics. In Cologne, the RDS members decided without dissenting votes to accept IUB as an official member. IUB is the only private institution elected into the RDS.

Furthermore, Prof. Marcus Brueggen, professor of astrophysics at IUB, had the opportunity to give a talk on the German activities in the LOFAR-Project (LOFAR= LOw Frequency ARray). Rather than classical dish-like radio-antenna, LOFAR consists of a set of very simple, small radio antenna that are spread all over Europe. One of the worlds fastest supercomputers, a so-called 'blue gene' located in Groningen, correlates all incoming data and in this way the array of cheap antennae acts like a radio-telescope with a dish-size of several hundred kilometers.

Rat Deutscher Sternwarten
