Good grades for IUB: Advisory Board praises School of Engineering and Science

In October, the IUB School of Engineering and Science was evaluated by its advisory board. The independent panel of renowned American and German scientists attested IUB’s school the successful set-up of future-oriented research fields. The board's most important piece of advice for the future was for IUB to focus its profile on selected fields of excellence.

[ Nov 01, 2005]  In its annual report the board complimented the School of Engineering and Science on the successful start and set-up during the past four years in which the three foundations for a successful international research university have been set: Firstly, very good, young and ambitious scientists were recruited who, secondly, have the most modern laboratories and equipment available to them. Finally, a selective admission process allowed for the recruitment of talented master and PhD students.

As a result of this strategy the School of Engineering and Science was able to raise its third-party funding by 50 % up to 5,5 million Euro and placed more than 130 publications in internationally renowned magazines during the past year. Especially the research results in the fields of bio- and nano-technology as well as computer sciences received high approval by the board.

Additionally, IUB’s teaching concept received a positive evaluation as internationally attractive for committed and talented students because of the university’s small size allowing for individual supervision, its internationality, its accredited international degrees, and transdisciplinarity.

For the future development of the school the advisors recommended to further strengthen the existing profile. Most importantly, IUB will have to focus on selected research fields by recruiting scientific personnel in the respective disciplines. Furthermore, cooperation with regional as well as international research institutes are to be extended, and continued development of undergraduate and graduate programs will help to maintain IUB's position in positive competition with British and American universities.
