It's all about Mathematics: Conference in Honor of Professor Raymond O. Wells jr.

   

On December 1 and 2 a conference in honor of Prof. Raymond "Ronny" O. Wells jr. takes place in IUB's campus center. A selection of friends and colleagues from more than 35 years in mathematics will be on hand to honor the now Distinguished Professor in Mathematics.

[ Nov 29, 2005]  Among the distinguished guests who will be in attendance are Roger Penrose (Oxford University), Oswald Riemenschneider (University of Hamburg), Sidney Burrus (Rice University), Friedrich Hirzebruch (Max Planck Institut Bonn), Ivan Penkov (IUB) and Howard Resnikoff (Board of Governors of IUB). The program starts on Thursday, 10 a.m. with a welcome speech by IUB president Dr. Fritz Schaumann.

Raymond O. Wells, jr., received his Ph.D. degree from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University in 1965 and thereafter had a 35-year career as a mathematics professor at Rice University in Houston. He is the recipient of the Fulbright, Guggenheim, and Alexander von Humboldt awards, and is a fellow of the AAAS.

In 1970-71 and in 1979-80 he was a Visiting Member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and he was a Visiting Professor at Brandeis, Göttingen, Paris, Oxford, Colorado, and Bremen. From 1998 to 2001 Wells was in Bremen working on the creation of International University Bremen. In 2001 he became Vice-President for External Affairs and Professor of Mathematics at IUB. He has published books in the fields of mathematics, physics, mathematical engineering, and mathematical history; and is the author of more than 100 research articles.
