Fascination Deep Sea

On Wednesday, January 25, the first lecture of the 2006 University Club Lecture series will take place. Prof. Dr. Antje Boetius, Professor of Microbiology, will speak on the topic: "The dark side of the Earth - new life forms and ecosystems at the bottom of the ocean."

[ Jan 19, 2006]  Prof. Boetius will present examples of deep sea research. New technical deep sea equipment like research submarines and robots enable scientists to explore life in 1000 -4000 m below sea level. In 2005 a new European research project began: HERMES (Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins of European Seas). The project is designed to gain new insights into the biodiversity, structure, function and dynamics of ecosystems along Europe's deep-ocean margin.

The lecture focuses on deep sea habitats and introduces strange life forms that makes us aware of the still undiscovered places on Earth. The lecture is in German and lasts about 30 minutes. Beginning at 7 p.m. the lecture takes place at the IUB University Club.
