New IUB Professor of International Law Georg Ress
gives inaugural lecture on Human Rights in Europe

On February 14, 2006, Georg Ress, former judge of the European Court and Professor of International Law since September 2005, will give his inaugural lecture about "Human Rights Protection in Europe“. The public English language lecture starts at 7.30 p. m. and takes place in IUB’s Campus Center. Visitors are welcome!

[ Feb 09, 2006]  Professor Georg Ress’ appointment was made possible by a private endowment. IUB President Fritz Schaumann notes: "I am pleased about the fact that a Bremen entrepreneur once more supported us generously in establishing this chair. With Professor Ress we were able to appoint a highly competent and internationally renowned scientist in the field of Law. In doing so we managed to add an important new field to our study program."

Human rights in Europe constitute George Ress’ principal topic. Before coming to IUB the bearer of several doctoral and honorary doctoral titles served six years (1998 - 2004) as judge at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. An important part of his scientific career were his nearly 20 years (1979 - 1998) as director of the world-renowned Europa-Institut of Saarland University. Ress contributed substantially to the institute’s present day set-up and established the graduate program "European Integration". In addition to his extensive national and international research and teaching activity Prof. Ress served as a member of the Law Board of the German Foreign Office (1980-98), as well as the German representative of the European Human Rights Commission in Strasbourg (1994-1999).
