Chinese Culture between tradition and modernity

On March 12 begins a lecture series by IUB scholars in Bremen's Überseemuseum. The lecture series "Chinese culture between tradition and modernity" pays tribute to the opening of a new exhibition about Asia in the Überseemuseum. The first lecture by IUB professor Nicola Spakowski will focus on Confucius: "Wisdom between Knowledge and moral values - Confucianism in traditional and contemporary China."

[ Feb 23, 2006]  On four Sundays in March and April at 11.30 a.m., IUB scholars will present their research into various areas of Chinese culture. The series encompasses a variety of subjects: the analysis of the Mao cult, the history of the Peking opera as well as Kungfu films from the last twenty years. The series was organised by IUB professor Nicola Spakowski, Professor of History, in cooperation with the Überseemuseum Bremen. Graduate students will offer insights in areas that are still exotic for Western Europeans.

The first lecture will take place on 12th March and focuses on Confucius’ teachings (551-479 b.c.) and those of his successors. Historian Nicola Spakowski will introduce central ideas of Confucianism and explore their influence on Chinese thought and society.

Three more lectures will follow:

March 19: The Peking Opera: Stories, Roles, Masks
Heidrun Hörner, Graduate Student (Humanities)

April 2: "The Red Sun in Our Hearts" – Origin and Change of the Mao Cult
Daniel Leese, Graduate Student (Humanities)

April 9: Kungfu Movies – An Expression of Chinese Identity?
Hon Hei Bob Tsang, Graduate Student (Integrated Social Sciences)

All lectures are in German.
Beginning at 11.30 a.m. the lectures take place at the Forum of the Überseemuseum; admission is free.
