IUB Students debate at the European Championships 2006

Ten IUB students are representing their alma mater at the European Universities Debating Championships 2006 in Berlin from March 23 to March 27. 420 students from over 20 countries will participate in the competition sponsored chiefly by Germany’s largest weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT. Using the “Britsh Parliamentary Style” the “battle of words” determines the best speaker amongst all competitors.

[ Mar 23, 2006]  With four teams and two judges IUB’s delegation forms one of the largest coming from Germany. Despite its recent founding the IUB Debating Society has already established itself in the international debating community. In the past three years IUB debaters won tournaments in Berlin, Gdansk, and Riga. After reaching semi-finals at last year’s European competition and the Grand Final of the 2006 World Debating Championship in Dublin, the society members are confident of getting at least one of its teams into the final rounds of the Berlin competition.

IUB Debating Society
• founded at the beginning of the aca-demic year 2002-2003
• member of the Verband der Debat-tierclubs an Hochschulen e. V. (VDCH) since November 2002
• Debating style: British Parliamentary Style that models the debating protocol of the British parliament

Debating
Debating is a British invention that has mostly stayed within the British Commonwealth and English-speaking world (in Australia, Pakistan, and USA for example). In recent years it's been gradually gaining popularity in continental Europe, especially in the Netherlands, Germany, and many Eastern European countries.
