Chinese Culture between tradition and modernity

On April 9, 2006, the final lecture in a series four by IUB scholars entitled ‘Kung-Fu Movies – An Expression of Chinese Identity?’ will take place in Bremen's Überseemuseum. The lecture series "Chinese culture between tradition and modernity" pays tribute to the opening of a new exhibition about Asia in the Überseemuseum. The first lecture by IUB professor Nicola Spakowski focused on Confucius: "Wisdom between Knowledge and moral values - Confucianism in traditional and contemporary China."

[ Apr 05, 2006]  Since March 19 IUB scholars have presented insights into their research concerning various areas of Chinese culture. Starting Sundays at 11.30 a. m with an analysis of the Mao cult, the series will end by offering insights into the Kung-Fu films genre of the last twenty years. The series was organised by IUB professor Nicola Spakowski, Professor of History, in cooperation with the Überseemuseum Bremen. Graduate students will offer insights in areas that are still exotic for Western Europeans.

The final lecture will take place on 9th of April and focuses on ‘Kung-Fu Movies – An Expression of Chinese Identity?’ To western spectators the Kung-Fu film is the most well known genre of East Asian film. Kung Fu films created a certain Eastern Asian image, in particular of the Chinese society. Graduate Student Hon Hei Bob Tsang will analyse these characteristics in addition to their social historical background. Further, Tsang will go into the matter about an existing connection between the films and Chinese identity formation. These and further aspects will be explored based on extracts from selected Kung-Fu films.

The lecture is in German. Beginning at 11.30 a.m. the lectures take place at the Forum of the Überseemuseum; admission is free.
