INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Meet the World at BRIMUN:
3rd „Model United Nations“ conference on Campus

From April 9 to 13, 2006, the 3rd „Bremen International Model United Nations“ (BRIMUN) will be held at IUB. Organized by the local Model United Nations student society at IUB, BRIMUN will bring together more than 150 students from Europe, America, the Middle East, and Africa who will participate in a university simulation of the United Nations.

[ Apr 07, 2006]  The delegates of this year’s BRIMUN conference will be treated to another exciting program. The two top key note speakers of the opening ceremony on Sunday will be Joachim Treusch, at present executive chairman of the Research Center Jülich and designated IUB president, as well as Markus Ederer, Head of the Planning Department at the German Federal Foreign Office. In preparing the program the BRIMUN organizers this time especially turned their attention to often overlooked or forgotten problems and conflicts:

● Security Council: The Middle East as the powder keg of world politics
● Peace Building Commision: The situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
● General Assembly: Debates about a) the question of tactical nuclear weapons, b) measures to improve international handgun control, c) transnational nuclear fuel supply
● Human Rights Commission: a) the right to reproduction in the context of the growing world population, b) the human rights situation in Uzbekistan, c) measures to ensure the rights of asylum seekers
● International Court of Justice: Islamic Republic of Iran v. United States of America (Aerial incident of 3 July 1998)

Also, for the first time, the African Union is simulated, dealing with the following topics:

a) ways to stop the use of child soldiers in armed conflicts in Africa and measures to facilitate their disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration, b) enhancing African inter-state trade, with a view to establishing an African Free Trade Zone, c) cooperation in combating corruption as a measure to increase the efficiency of aid distribution in Africa

Model United Nations
The concept of a Model United Nations was developed by students in America more than 50 years ago in order to simulate the challenges of diplomacy and international negotiation. These model conferences particularly focuss on areas of peace and conflict resolution that are a part of the day-to-day work of the United Nations. During a MUN conference participants are assigned to delegations representing a specific country – never their real home country though. These delegations represent the positions of their countries in the General Assembly, Security Council and the respective committees. The debates are held in English, and the student diplomats strictly have to observe all rules of the United Nations protocol.
