Little, headmaster of the prestigious British Eton College, will give a talk at IUB on “Eton College - Tradition and Approaches to Modern Education" and is available for questions after the presentation. A small reception following the talk will give further opportunity to discuss the topic not only with the guest, but also with members of the IUB community. [ Apr 25, 2006]  Eton College is one of the most famous boarding schools in Great Britain. It was founded initially as "King's College of our Lady of Eton" in 1440 by Heinrich VI, and provided free education to 70 students of poor background. Today the student body approximates 1300, ranging in age from 13 to 18 years. The annual tuition fee is ₤ 23.000.

The college is renowned not only because of its rich traditions, but also because of its former students: “Old Etonians” such as Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as 18 British Prime Ministers. The wellknown black school uniform was introduced in 1820 on the occasion of the death and mourning of King George III. However, modern and innovative educational concepts are the proclaimed goals of the elite school today, especially since headed by Tony Little. In order to emphasize academic merit over financial means, Eton College currently provides financial support to a quarter of the student body in order to help gifted students receive a high-quality education regardless of parental income. Little’s latest decision in April this year received a wide public notice and debate, namely to appoint an Imam to Eton for teaching Arabic and for further promoting an understanding of the Islamic culture.

Anotony Little was a student at Eton and afterwards studied Literature at Cambridge. He taught English at Tonbridge School in Kent, founded in 1553. Prior to taking office at Eton in 2002, Antony Little was headmaster of such prestigious schools as Chigwell and Oakham amongst others.
