Students Performance of Musical Rent

On Friday, May 12, IUB will witness the premiere of RENT, a musical performed and directed exclusively by students. A second performance is scheduled for Saturday, May 13. The play will begin at 7.30 p.m. and will take place in the IUB cinema. Tickets are available at the nights of the performances.

[ May 11, 2006]  Rent will take the audience to the world of Bohemian New York, where a group of society’s outcasts tries to cope with each other, their own lives, drugs, and death.

For almost two semesters, IUB students rehearsed for the Broadway musical. The roles of eight main characters had to be filled and the band practised for almost thirty songs. After endless hours of work, the show is now ready to be put on stage.

RENT is a colorful yet sobering tale of struggling artists in the stark world of contemporary New York’s East Village. Facing poverty, relationship problems, moral conflicts and prejudice against non-conventional sexual preferences, we follow the main characters through one year in their life. From one Christmas to the next they grow and change in the world shadowed by the AIDS epidemic. RENT encompasses a broad musical spectrum, including tango, hip hop, jazz and rock.
