Art and Metaphysics in the 20th Century: International Conference at IUB

From May 18 to 21, 2006, about 40 internationally recognized scholars will explore the relation between art and metaphysics at IUB

[ May 15, 2006]  Focusing on 20th-century art development and reception the German Research Foundation-financed conference will cover philosophical problems of meaning and ontology in the visual arts, with the special emphasis on how art might help to discover general metaphysical ‘truths’ about humanity’s relation to the cosmos. In addition the conference will examine, how metaphysical and cognate ideas such as the scientific and religious approaches, specifically twentieth-century and contemporary art-historical contexts, have influenced art interpretation on the one hand and have served as inspirational source for artists on the other hand.

Conference organizers Paul Crowther, IUB Professor of Art and Philosophy, Ursula Frohne, Professor of Art History at the University of Cologne, and Isabel Wünsche, IUB Professor of Art and Art History, succeeded in attracting internationally recognized scientists from Europe, North America, and Australia. Each of the individual English-language sessions is open to the public; prior registration is required.
