Bremen pupil awarded with exceptional prize at the Federal Science Competition "Jugend forscht" - IUB professor acts as technical advisor

On May 21, 2006, Annette Schavan, Federal Minister for Education and Research, awarded Simon Schmitt (18) of the Bremen High School Kippenberg-Gymnasium with the exceptional prize for the best interdisciplinary work in the Federal Science Competition “Jugend forscht” (Young Researchers).

[ May 24, 2006]  The prize is endowed with 1.700 €. Schmitt’s project "Acoustic Mosquito Hunt", which combines elements from mathematics and computer science, was supervised by Dierk Schleicher, IUB Professor of Mathematics. Altogether, the jury awarded fifteen new generation researchers of seven federal states with first prizes in different categories.

Schmitt managed to exactly locate mosquitoes in the dark by using five specifically converted microphones and a self-developed computer program for analyzing their acoustic signals. Especially the complex algorithmic post processing of the sound signals for analysis impressed the jury.
