Federal Republic of Germany, The Federal Chancellor

Address (Translation from German)

I herewith cordially congratulate International University Bremen's students graduating in 2006 on the successful conclusion of their studies.

You are now at the beginning of your professional career and your IUB degree opens up excellent opportunities for careers in science, administration, or politics.
I would also like to extend my congratulations to the parents of today’s graduates. It's largely due to the way you educated and influenced your children, dear parents, that they were able to successfully complete their studies.

However, today not only the graduates say farewell to IUB. IUB’s president, Dr. Fritz Schaumann, will also soon leave and say good-bye to IUB. I would like to express my appreciation of Dr. Schaumann's exceptional achievements in Bremen. As Founding President you built up this university and have set standards in doing so. With IUB you have created a university which consistently focuses on internationality and academic excellence and in which students are central figures. For these reasons IUB is one of the best universities in Germany; and gives valuable impulses to the ongoing reform of Germany's state-run university system.

Dr. Schaumann, I have heard that you once said, “Every 7 to 10 years I need a new task; that way I remain fascinated by my job“.
Well, the time has come and your task as IUB's president will be passed into the capable hands of Professor Treusch. We are keen to see what your next project as President of the Art Foundation of North-Rhine-Westphalia will be.

Dear graduates, parents and members of IUB, I wish you all the best for the future and a wonderful graduation ceremony.

Angela Merkel
