The 2006 RoboCup starts

From June 14-18, the 10th RoboCup takes place in Bremen. More than 400 teams and 2,500 participants from 36 countries gather in Bremen to compete in three main categories: the robot soccer competition, the robot rescue competition, and the RoboCupJunior for educational purposes for young people.

[ Jun 13, 2006]  About 270 teenage scientists are staying on the IUB campus. Their robots will compete in the Junior League and will provide a touch of color as the teenagers often use Lego and Fischertechnik blocks for construction.

Andreas Birk, IUB Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science coordinates the Rescue Robot League. It's start will be marked by a "chemical disaster" starting at 4 p.m. Disaster rescue is a serious social issue, in RoboCup Rescue it involves a large number of heterogeneous agents in an hostile environment. The competition is a means to promote research and development in this socially significant domain at various levels involving multi-agent team work coordination, physical robotic agents for search and rescue, information infrastructures, personal digital assistants, a standard simulator and decision support systems, evaluation benchmarks for rescue strategies and robotic systems that are all integrated into comprehensive systems for the future.
