On July 13, the German language exhibition “Expedition Informatics” opens in the “Haus der Wissenschaft” in Bremen’s City Center. For six weeks, until August 26, 2006, visitors can explore the important role computer science today assumes in research and every day life. IUB’s exhibit invites to a playful discovery of the informatics factor in various IUB research fields by accompanying the Robot IQ-B/06 on his “Expedition Informatics at IUB”.

How are computer chips tested to make sure they were manufactured flawlessly and work properly? How do rescue robots locate injured people in a catastrophe area? Can you actually measure if people are really happy? And what else can robots and computers explore that humans are not able to? In the game „Expedition Informatics at IUB“ the little robot IQ-B/06, who is participating in an IUB internship as expedition robot, will find answers to these and other exciting questions with the help of various IUB scientists.

Besides IUB, nine other major Bremen science institutions are presenting exciting aspects of computer science today including marine research, media sciences, art, medical science, and logistics. The exhibition is part of the “Informatics Year”, Germany’s official science year 2006, organised by the initiative “Science in Dialogue” and the Gesellschaft für Informatik under the patronage of the Fedral Ministry of Education and Research.

Don’t miss the “Long Night of Informatics” on July 14. Starting at 5.15 p. m. at the “Haus der Wissenschaft” and in a tent on the nearby market place “Domshof” numerous Bremen scientists, including four IUB professors, will give talks and demonstrations on exciting and astonishing topics of computer science.
