INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BREMEN

History Exhibition at IUB University Club: From Field to University Campus

A Piece of Local History in Bremen North plays out in the International University Bremen University Club daily until 30. November.

[ Nov 09, 2006]  Connecting with the community was the inspiration for a month long exhibition in November which looks at local history. Members of the local community worked together with students and IUB University Club e.V. members to create an informative collection of film, pictures and documentation which places IUB’s short history into the 600 year history of the Grohn-Vegesack area.

Said exhibition curator and University Club treasurer Warren Laine of the project, “The club has a mandate to offer events for both IUB and the local community. With this exhibition we had the unique chance, to provide our students, ourselves, and the community with an informative moment of reflection. The land on which IUB is situated, was once farm land, then a barracks, then a relocation camp, the largest in Germany, - a point for sending people home, or into the world after the tragedy of the second world war. We are now recalling later generations and again sending them out into the world; not after a tragedy but after something very good. It is one of the club’s functions to be in open dialogue with the community. What better way but for us to be aware of the rich history of this small area in Bremen North of which we are just the latest layer, than with this exhibition.”

The exhibition begins by looking at the time before the 1800s. "From the first mention of Lesum in the year 860, to the shipbuilding and trade of the 1600’s Bremen North has played a key role in the history of Bremen." begins the first of 30 information posters. Moving through the next 200 years, the exhibition focuses on the industry and shipbuilding that made Vegesack and Bremen North so important to Bremen. From there the exhibition looks at the building of the Flak Kaserne in 1936, the Refugee Camp Grohn from 1946-1954, the Roland Kaseren Logistics School from 1956 and finally the founding of International University Bremen in 1999.

Said Dr. Brendan Dooley, University Club president and in charge of researching the project; "Putting the exhibition together has been a real adventure, both for us and the students who helped. This part of Bremen has a fascinating history; it is a place where great events occurred, and everyday life went through profound transformations. The exhibition shows how real people experienced these transformations, by photographs, objects, and personal testimonies. Viewers will have a rare chance to see history in action, right at their doorstep. "

The Exhibition includes a weekly lecture series on subjects of local historical interest such as the Vegesacker herring fleet, shipbuilding, porcelain manufacture and the Roland Kaserne. The lectures run each Wednesday from 19:00- 20:00 in the university club.

A complete listing of the lectures can be found on the official exhibition website.

The Exhibition runs until 30. November in the IUB University Club. Monday to Friday from 18:00 to 20:00. Saturday and Sunday from 14:00 - 16:00. Groups are also welcome at prearranged times.
