INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Research prize for excellence in research
and cooperation in Bremen

On November 15, 2006, the association “unifreunde e. V.” awarded the Ernst A. C. Lange Prize for the joint research project “New display technology for mobile applications” of IUB and University of Bremen. The award, which is endowed with 5000 euros prize money, acknowledges innovative co-operational research between scientists of the two Bremen universities in the fields of Mathematics, Natural and Technical Sciences.

[ Nov 15, 2006]  The two laureates 2006 are the two Bremen scientists Dietmar Knipp, Professor of Electrical Engineering at IUB, and Wolfgang Benecke, Professor of Physics, Electronics and Information Technology at University of Bremen. The aim of their joint research project is the development of a new type of projection display for mobile application such as laptop computers, mobile phones, and digital cameras. The two professors have been working together on the creation of a miniature projector, between 5 and 30 millimeters in maximum edge length and suitable for the integration into small devices, since Summer 2005.

Dietmar Knipp has been teaching as a professor of electrical engineering at IUB since 2003. His research focuses on electronic components and photonics with a special emphasis on organic and molecular transistors, nanophotonics and optical sensors. He has published extensively in these fields and holds various national and international patents in thin layer electronics and photonics. Professor Knipp is a 1999 graduate of RWTH Aachen University in electrical engineering. Between 1996 and 2000, he did research at the Research Center Jülich, first as research assistant, later as a postdoc, studying amorphous and nanocrystalline silicones for optical sensors. Between 2000 and 2002, he was an electronic device scientist at the Palo Alto Research Center, and subsequently worked as a senior researcher at the Interuniversity Microelectronic Center (IMEC) in Leuven, Belgium.

Wolfgang Benecke has been a professor of at the University of Bremen since 1992. He is the co-founder of the Institute of Micro-sensors (IMSAS), which he is leading today together with Professor Walter Lang. The institute’s main area of interest is the domain of micro-technology and MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems), with projects in the fields of medical engineering, biotechnology, automotive engineering, environmental measurements technology and logistics. Wolfgangs Benecke is member of various international committees (publications, conferences), as well as member of the Micrrosystems Center Bremen (MCB) and Embedded Microsystems Bremen (EMB), an institute of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research.

The association “unifreunde Bremen e.V.” (society of friends of the Bremen universities), which was established in 1961, aims at promoting research and teaching in the city state of Bremen. A special focus is on the cooperation between IUB and the University of Bremen as an integral part of Bremen’s profile as an innovative science center in Germany. The endowment for the yearly prize acknowledging the innovative cooperation projects between the two universities is alternately provided by the Ernst A.C. Lange Foundation and the Sparkasse Bremen.
