JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Jacobs University at the Bremen “Schaffer” banquet

It is an ancient ritual: the Bremen "Schaffer" banquet. This year, Klaus J. Jacobs and president Joachim Treusch were in attendance at the annual "Schaffer" banquet. Together with two Jacobs University students they met Indian industrialist Lakshmi Mittal.

[ Feb 15, 2007]  The Schaffer banquet is the oldest men's banquet in the world and has been staged in February every year since 1545. Merchants, ship owners and captains meet at Neptune's table, which takes the form of a tricorn, to celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of the new business season with business partners from all over the world. Guests may only take part in formal dress e.g. evening dress or uniform - and only once in their lives, unless they happen to be citizens of Bremen.
Women are usually not allowed to take part but this year, for the first time, a female guest of honor was invited: German Chancelor Angela Merkel.
