Lions Campus Club hosted blood drive

On February 28, 2007, the Lions Campus Club of Jacobs University in co-operation with the Red Cross hosted a blood drive. Students, staff, faculty were invited to take part in the blood drive. The fully equipped mobile donation facility of the Red Cross open to blood donors from 11 a. m. to 5 p.m. It was stationed in front of the University Club.

[ Feb 23, 2007]  Blood is needed for emergencies and for people who have cancer, blood disorders, sickle cell, anemia and other illnesses. Some people need regular blood transfusions to live. For nearly five million people who receive blood transfusions every year, a donation can make the difference. In 2006, the Lions Campus Club had organized a blood drive for the first time. It was a huge success, 107 members of the university community supported the initiative. Only 10 donors were missing to beat the record of the mobile donation facility. This year, 89 donors supported the blood drive.

Donating blood takes one hour, including a restorative snack. All potential blood donors are asked to bring their identity cards along and – if available – their blood donation documents. The Lions Campus Club organized this social event that brought together members of our community in an act of charity. The Lions are currently planning to make blood drives at Jacobs University a regular event with a greater capacity so that donors from the neighbourhood can also be accomodated.

The idea behind the Lions Club emerged in the United States nearly 100 years ago during the First World War. Under the guidance of the founding father Melvin Jones, a few idealistic people united in order to face social problems of their time. Today the entire number of Lions Clubs Members worldwide amounts to 1,3 million in over 190 nations.
