JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Gender Awareness Week - Become Aware!

Are gender roles still relevant today? Can there be a feminism that doesn’t alienate men? How do gender roles differ across cultures and religions? Are men and women actually more similar than they are different? Is it nice to have contexts solely for men/women? Women in leadership – how to get through the glass ceiling?

[ Mar 05, 2007]  From March 8th through 18th, Jacobs University will be hosting its first Gender Awareness Week. Throughout this time period, gender issues will be examined from diverse angles and transdisciplinary perspectives. Though gender issues are often associated with women’s issues and the feminist movement, Jacobs University attempts to take a more comprehensive approach.

The week of events will be kicked off on Thursday evening at 18:00 in the Campus Center with a champagne reception and opening adress by President Treusch.

Two highlights of the week:

On Saturday, March 17th Jacobs University's first "Women in Leadership" Conference will take place. Learn from the experiences of four successful women in leadership positions in Germany. Find out what it takes to get there, whether mentors are important, and how to juggle professional and personal life choices. We are especially proud to offer a networking opportunity with female leaders having profound experiences in the following sectors: entrepreneurship, company leadership, research, and political representation. Among them Ms. Heide Simonis the former prime minister of Schleswig-Hollstein and the current President of UNICEF Germany.

Be invited to attend the individual presentations as well as the panel discussion, the ZONTA Women in Leadership Art Contest, and a couple of scenes of the Vagina Monologues. This event is organized in conjunction with the Gender Awareness week.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, March 9th & 10th the Vagina Monologues will be performed in the Campus Center.

Since 2004, the Vagina Monologues have been a tradition at our young university and are definitely one of the long awaited highlights of the semester.

The underlying vision behind this year’s Vagina Monologues is to address Jacobs’ international community and the current global situation by producing a sometimes hard-hitting, sometimes hilariously over-the-top theatre production revolving around the broad spectrum of situations in which women, and humans in general, can find themselves today, especially concerning self-respect, empowerment and sexuality. The performance is held in the framework of V-Day, a world-wide movement combating violence against women. The benefits from the performance will be donated to the AWO Frauenhaus, a woman’s shelter in downtown Bremen.
