Vagina Monologues Play to Packed House

The fifth run of the Vagina Monologues at Jacobs University played to packed houses on Friday and Saturday night raising a generous contribution to the AWO Frauenhaus and delighting audiences.

[ Mar 12, 2007]  The dozen performances were highlighted by such gems as "The Flood," performed by Steffi Hamann, as an elderly woman describing her dream of dining with George Clooney; Anastasia Abramova's (who also co-directed) deep and creamy accent in "Short Skirt" paying homage to Berlin cabaret which would have made Marlene Dietrich proud; and Maeve Trudeau's orgasmic performance as a lesbian dominatrix which rightly brought the house to its knees.

The Monologues managed to raise both awareness and a large donation. "This year we raised over €1000 for the AWO Frauenhaus", said Anja Jungermann, co-organiser of the event, "which is significantly more than last year."

The entertaining and often thought provoking student performances were supported by the talented expertise and hard work of the technical crew, music club and "the Other Side". Producer Maeve Trudeau and her team did a brilliant job of transforming the campus center into a theater and back again with but the odd plastic cup remaining to mark where the magic had taken place.

This years Monologues drew atttention to the plight of women in combat zones around the world; women for whom the daily struggle for safety, dignity, shelter and food transcend gender issues and become issues of basic human rights. This years Monologues were unique in bringing for the first time creative stories from Jacobs University students in addition to the script of the traditional Vagina Monologues which form the basis of the work.

The Vagina Monologues was the first of many Gender Awareness week activities. The week was kicked off on Thursday March 8 in the campus center with a speech by President Treusch. Gender Awareness week seeks to raise awareness in both sexes about gender issues. A second highlight, the Women in Leadership conference will take place in the campus center on March 17.
