The Vodafone Germany Foundation awards scholarships to students at Jacobs University with immigration background

The Vodafone Germany Foundation extends cooperational activities: starting from the 2007/8 academic year, Jacobs University Bremen will become a partner of Vodafone Chances, the only national scholarship program for students with a migration background who study at private universities. Jacobs University will be the fourth partner-university in the program.

[ Mar 12, 2007]  In presenting the cooperation between the two institutions, the Senator for Education and Science in Bremen, Willi Lemke, Prof. Dr. Joachim Treusch, President of Jacobs University, and Dr. Bernhard Lorentz, CEO of the Vodafone Germany Foundation, stressed the importance of financially supporting talented young people from immigrant families.

The scholarship program aims at enhancing integration by supporting talented students, whereby also giving an example to all citizens. The Vodafone Germany Foundation welcomed its first scholars in Berlin last year.

“We are really enthusiastic about our new cooperation with Jacobs University. In this way we can broaden our support for gifted students with migration background. We are now a step closer to our goal, namely, to create an elite of responsibility in Germany independently of their residential status or background”, sais Dr. Bernhard Lorentz, CEO of the Vodafone Group Foundation.

Joachim Treusch, President of Jacobs University, comments on the new cooperation with the Vodafone Germany Foundation: „In addition to excellence, intercultural competence is one of the most important aspects of our university’s educational concept. In this respect migrants’ biographies already are rich in personal experiences. They will therefore be a valuable complement and an exciting new facet of our campus community. Furthermore, the social bridging that Vodafone Chances aspires for – integration through educational support – is also a major concern of Jacobs University.”

Willi Lemke believes that „the scholarship program of The Vodafone Germany Foundation is an exceptionally deserving contribution to integration. I know from the STARTScholarship program that educational development supports talented migrant children in a similar fashion here in Bremen, how motivating such a support can be.“ According to the Bremen Senator for Education „the success of these young people will encourage the participation of other migrant children“

Apart from receiving full grants for their studies, the scholars will receive additional financial support for their living costs. Moreover, successful applicants will be supported during their internships, visits abroad, academic and social networking during meetings with other scholars. The requirements for the stipends are excellent high school results, willingness to perform, social commitment, and motivation. Furthermore, the applicants will have to pass the entry exams in the respective partner schools, including in Jacobs University.

The final decisions about applications are made by independent experts and university representatives. The scholarship program gives applicants the chance to study at one of the partner schools: The European Business School in Oestrich-Winkel, The Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, The WHU – Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar and from now on Jacobs University Bremen.

The Vodafone Germany Foundation is one of the biggest company-affiliated foundations in Germany. It initiates and supports projects that contribute to societal progress. The foundation’s mission is primarily concerned with „Recognize. Support. Change“. This mission comprises the three areas education, society/health and arts/culture.
