Intergenerational Justice and Economic Growth – A Challenge for Economic Policy

On Monday, April 23, 2007, Jacobs University welcomes Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther, Professor at the European Business School and
Director of the Institute of German Economy, as part of the “Distinguished Lecture Series“ of Jacobs Center for Lifelong Learning and Institutional Development. At 5:30 pm
the guest will give a talk on the "Intergenerational Justice and Economic Growth - A Challenge for Economic Policy”.

[ Apr 19, 2007]  If we accept that economic growth and hence welfare unfold by the willingness, the ability, the chance and the incentive to work, and that they can be ensured by these means in the long run, we can immediately draw a basic conclusion: Individuals and their qualification are the most important drivers of an expanding economy. A shrinking population leads to a loss in welfare and prospects. It is incompatible with the pursuit of intergenerational justice, which does not only regard the labor force and pensioners, but which also includes the young and the unborn. Without interference, it is unlikely that the process of a shrinking population will come to an end.

The lecture will take place in the Conference Room of Jacobs Universitys Campus Center. The interested public is invited to attend the public talk. Admission is free.
