JACOBS UNIVERSITY BREMEN

Professors versus students debate

On Wednesday, April 18, the Jacobs University Bremen Debating Society is again hosting an edition of the famous Professors vs. Students debates. The debate will take place in the Campus Center Conference Hall and will start at 8.30 p.m.

[ Apr 17, 2007]  Four professors and four students will test their ability to develop and refute arguments in support of their position, and eventually to persuade the judges and audience. The topic will be announced to everyone shortly before the beginning of the debate. The teams have 15 minutes to prepare for their opening speeches. Last year, the teams were discussing the “restriction of freedom of speech”. Members of the community are cordially invited to what promises to be the debating event of the semester.

The Society is pleased to see debating, among others:
Dr. Marcus Brüggen (Professor of Astrophysics), Dr. Ulrich Kühnen (Professor of Psychology), Dr. Thomas Rommel (Professor of Literature), Dr. Matthias Ullrich (Professor of Microbiology); Matthias Bröcheler (Class of 2007), Gabriela Olariu (Class of 2008), Felix Schlesinger (Class of 2008).

The panel of adjudicators will consist of, among others:
Dr. Matthijs Bogaards (Professor of Political Science), Dr. Brendan Dooley (Professor of History), Ana Draghici (Class of 2008), Henrik Maedler (Class of 2007, President of the Society), Dr. Klaudia Brix (Professor of Cell Biology)

The event will be supported by the German newspaper "Die ZEIT".

Debating at Jacbos University
There are various formats of competitive university-style debate. The Jacobs University Bremen Debating Society runs most of its debates in British Parliamentary Style (BPS), with four teams debating at the same time. In the affirmative position there are two teams: one opening and one closing government. The burden of the first is to introduce a case, which is then developed by the second. The opposition fulfils an obvious role: the refutation of the government case.
