Jacobs University wins RoboCup German Open

The Rescue Robot Team of Jacobs University won the RoboCup German Open. With only four teams this year there were very few but very strong participants in the Rescue Robot League, which was dominated by the performance of Jacobs University’s team, led by Andreas Birk, Professor of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science.

[ Apr 23, 2007]  The strongest competitor was the second place Team PARS from Iran, which belongs to the world class with its remote controlled but very mobile robots. But also the third pace team Resko from Universität Koblenz, after all the second best European team at the last World Championship in Bremen, was a strong competitor.

The decisive advantage of the Jacobs University Team is the currently world-wide unique cooperation of a teleoperated and a completely autonomous robot. The Jacobs University Rescue Robots are not only as mobile as comparable Japanese or Persian systems, but they also possess a high amount of Artificial Intelligence. The robots can for example generate maps under most difficult environment conditions, they can autonomously detect victims, and the can plan their actions for a directed exploration of an area.

For the first time, the RoboCup German Open took place at the Hannover Fair (17. – 21. April). The event managed to attract many professional visitors due to its central location on the Hannover Fair in the Pavilions underneath the Expo-Roof. It turned out that there is a vastly growing interest from industry in mobile robots and the related new application areas.

The RoboCup German Open is an important test for the World Championship, which will take place from June 30 to July 10, 2007 in Atlanta, USA.

The Rescue Robot League at the German Open was organized by Adam Jacoff who is responsible at the US National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) for official test methods in the area of Safety, Security and Rescue Robots (SSRR). New test elements were used for the first time in Hannover, which will also be used in Atlanta for evaluating the systems. The success in Hannover has shown that the Jacobs University's Rescue Robots are already well prepared for the world championship.
